This test card provides only a preliminary analytical test result. A more specific alternate chemical method must be used in order to obtain a confirmed analytical result. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is the preferred confirmatory method. Clinical consideration and professional judgment should be applied to any drug of abuse test result, particularly when preliminary positive results are used.

What is Propoxyphene?

  • Propoxyphene was first introduced in 1957 in the US.
  • Propoxyphene is a mild, narcotic, analgesic drug structurally related to methadone.
  • It is a member of opioid family and is ½ to2/3 as potent as codeine in relieving pain.
  • It can relieve moderate pain  to sever pain from minor injury or to a major surgery. It reduces pain by blocking the pain sensing receptors in the brain.
  • It is an odorless, white crystalline powder with a bitter taste.

What is the impact of Propoxyphene on the brain?

  • Consumption of Propoxyphene blocks the part of the brain which registers pain signals. Propoxyphene binds to the chemical receptors in the brain that communicate pain signals and prevents these messages from being processed.

  • A case of ischemic colitis has been reported following an overdose of Propoxyphene which was complicated by severe hypotension.
  • Dermatologic side effects including rashes and itch have been reported.
  • Elevated liver function tests, jaundice, hepatic steatosis, hepatomegaly, hepatocellular injury, and hepatotoxicity.
  • Eye swelling, redness of eyes and blurred vision have been reported.

What is the impact of Propoxyphene on pregnant women and their babies?

  • Propoxyphene has not been approved as safe for use during pregnancy and may have adverse affects on foetal development.
  • Babies born to women who abuse Propoxyphene during pregnancy may suffer from withdrawal symptoms, such as seizures, tremors, diarrhea and increased body temperature upon birth.
  • Babies who have been exposed to Propoxyphene during pregnancy may have  birth defects such as club foot, limb reduction defects, abnormally small head, cataracts, benign tumours and heart defects.
  • Common side effects that a pregnant women may experience are constipation, as abdominal pain, skin rashes, light-headedness, headache, hallucinations, weakness, visual disturbances, nausea and vomiting.

What is the impact of Propoxyphene on teenagers and young adults.

What are the medical use of Propoxyphene?

  • In 1970’s Propoxyphene was the top prescribed medication for relieving pain.
  • It was first introduced as an alternative over- the-counter drug that is stronger but not as potent as other related substances such as morphine.
  • After being used as a prescription drug for years it was discovered that Propoxyphene even  when taken in prescribed dose causes serious toxicity of the heart causing failure of the heart and leads to sudden death.
  • By 1996 Propoxyphene was established as the 12th leading cause of drug causality.
  • In 2010, the drug was discontinued across the US and banned from the medical use.

What are the ways in which Propoxyphene  is consumed for recreational purpose?

  • Propoxyphene has been banned in the medical field and declared as unfit for the consumption by humans.
  • It’s illegal manufacturing, selling and consumption has not stopped.
  • For recreational purpose, it can be taken orally, snorted, sniffed, or injected.
  • For immediate “high”, the abuser, generally powders the Propoxyphene pill and inhale or inject it in the vein or muscles.
  • This way the effect of the pill is immediate but it does not last for long enough.

This leads to consumption of higher and frequent dose, which  could be lead to life threatening  infection(HIV,AIDS) if the abuser uses infected needles and sometimes death from over dose.
