The Laboratory Urine Drug Confirmation is a laboratory-based GC/MS testing of the urine specimen.
How are the drugs confirmed?
Confirmation testing is performed by either gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or the superior technique of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). These confirmatory tests are based on the physical and chemical properties of the specific drug or metabolite to be measured. Drug identification is achieved by both chromatographic retention time and by the mass spectrum, which is the “drug fingerprint.” These tests are very sensitive, specific, and robust with respect to interfering substances.
Confirmations by GC/MS and LC/MS/MS are legally defensible evidence of drug use.
Confirmations of the following drugs are available.
- Amphetamines
- Barbiturates
- Benzodiazepines
- Cannabinoids(THC; Marijuana)
- Cocaine
- Methadone
- Opiates
- Soma (carisoprodol)

- Suboxone (Buprenorphine)
- Ultram (tramadol)
- Oxycodone
- Propoxyphene
- Methamphetamines
- Alcohol

Before an individual who has failed a required test may return to work, the Medical Review Officer shall determine that the individual is drug free and the risk of subsequent use of dangerous drugs by the person is sufficiently low to justify his or her returning to work. In addition the individual shall agree to be subjected to increased unannounced testing for a period as determined by the Medical Review Officer for a period of up to 60 months.
