Abusive And Medical Properties Of Phencyclidine


Definition: Phencyclidine is a while crystalline powder which has a distinctive bitter taste that is primarily used as a veterinary analgesic and anesthetic. The drug was originally found as an IV anesthetic, but due to its hallucinogenic effects and delirium in humans, it was discontinued. It is also known to be a psychoactive drug available in the form of hydrochloride salt. In other words, it is illegally used as a hallucinogen. The common street names of phencyclidine are angel dust, monkey dust, hog, reens, etc.

Abusive properties of phencyclidine:

The drug is available in liquid form and it is sprayed onto a leaf-like material such as marijuana, oregano, parsley, or mint and smoked. Within few minutes of smoking, the drug gives a euphoric feeling, pleasure. The toxic effects take place within 1 to 2 hours and last for some 4 to 8 hours and take few days to get rid of the effects. It creates a sense of detachment from the environment followed by increased power and strength, enhanced perceptions, delusions, hallucinations, etc. However, many people who use the drug for the first time have an unpleasant experience and do not use it again.

Acute effects of phencyclidine are hypertension, intracranial hemorrhage, nausea, vomiting, hypersalivation, slurred speech, perspirations, hyperthermia, bronchospasm, rapid eye movements, numbness, rhabdomyolysis, convulsions, and dystonias. Psychological effects are amnesia, confusion, agitation, violence, delusions, stupor, coma, dangerous behavior when intoxicated.

Some of the effects when it is used for long term are physical and psychological dependence, anxiety, depression, memory loss, slurred speech, psychosis, etc.

Nearly 10% of the drug is excreted as unchanged phencyclidine in the urine.

Medical properties of phencyclidine:

The main medical use of phencyclidine is as veterinary anesthetic. It also has a history of being used as a single preoperative anesthetic with no other agents, but later its use in human has been discontinued due to its hallucinogenic effects.
