Adulterant Drug Test
Creatinine test urine is mostly collected for creatinine clearance test. Sometimes the collected urine specimen might get adulterated with dirt in some form or the other and might not give correct results. Therefore specimen adulteration testing is quite necessary to verify the integrity of the urine specimen. Specimen validity test is done to ensure that the sample is not adulterated. With the growing number of detox products available in the market like artificial urine solutions, detox drinks, and lot more, specimen validity testing is a must. In fact, many laboratories make sure that they check the integrity of the sample before they perform the actual test in the sample.
Most of the creatinine test urine strips contain more than one chemically well-built reagent pad. The strip should be dipped in to the urine solution and the color changes should be noted and should be compared with the printed color chart. The color comparison is the easiest method to check for specimen adulteration testing. In fact, such color comparison tests helps to identify the adulteration of the sample with reference to getting to know the pH, specific gravity, nitrite tests, glutar-aldehyde, oxidant tests etcetera.
The presence of creatinine in test urine is an indication of the person to have consumed huge volumes of water to flush the drug of abuse. The presence of creatinine is a clear indication of the person having made attempts to conceal the drug testing by flushing mechanism. Constant flushing attempts empties the drug that one has abused, but also it brings down the amount of creatinine in the urine. Less than 5 mg/dL of creatinine in the urine is a clear indication of possible specimen dilution by flushing techniques.
If the value of the specific gravity of the urine is not within 1.003 to 1.030, then it is an indication that the specimen is not a genuine sample. It might be possibly due to attempts of detoxification and dilution. Some of the detoxification products contain gutaraldehyde, which is not a metabolic byproduct in human urine. Presence of glutaraldehyde has a major role in interfering with the enzymes involved in the immunoassay, thereby producing false negative results for samples. Glutaraldehye in urine indicates specimen adulteration. Some oxidants in the urine are also indicative of adulteration of the urine sample.
