Breathalyzer history
Study about alcohol abuse and its effects leads to the discovery of breathalyzer. As the alcohol testing was looking out for an effective instrument to find out the alcohol instantly they found out breathalyzer. It was established in 1954 by Professor Robert F. Borkenstein, Indiana University. This is the practical instrument to detect blood alcohol content. Portable breathalyzer was then widely used in all aspects.
Breathalyzer history starts with Borkenstein where he was working with photometry and light chemical reactions. This device works based on the oxidation of chemicals when reacted with alcohol and are predicted in the photometer. This better suited for the road side administer in detecting the alcohol content in the drivers.
After the invention of breathalyzer a law was enforced to test for alcohol compulsorily. This is to avoid drunken motorist in the highways. An officer will look for the drivers who are drunk and instructs to stop the journey. They are then taken to test alcohol content using breathalyzer. Before a motorist is taken for the test, there are certain procedures to follow. Driver is instructed to walk in a straight line, asked to touch his nose with closed eyes. These tests are followed by physical observation such as checking for blood shot eyes, slurred speech and smell. When they show indications for alcohol consumption then they are preceded with breathalyzer test. It is necessary to take certain preliminary test in order to avoid collapse with suspected people.
Testing for breath alcohol test by using breathalyzer kit have created awareness and reduced the amount of alcohol consumption while driving. First generation breathalyzer is called as drunkometer followed by intoximeter, alcometer. Second generation device is the breathalyzer. Dui breathalyzer was then developed according to the breathalyzer law. Breathalyzer tester is successful tester in the history.
