Benzodiazepines are antipsychotic agents which therapeutically modify the behavior of an individual. It has a broader spectrum of action and of course has lower abuse liability and lower toxicity than other antipsychotics. The absence of alteration of sleep architecture has led to the ousting of barbiturates from the treatment regimen for insomnia.

They are effectively used as muscle relaxants and for alleviating anxiety. The drug taken in the body is metabolized in the liver and excreted in urine which may continue for many days. The best method to detect benzodiazepines in urine is to perform a rapid dip stick assay in this detection period.

Role Of Body Mass In The Metabolism Of Drugs

There has been an extensive study regarding the role of body mass in the metabolism of drugs in the body. There is definitely a positive and strong relationship between the body mass and the metabolism of the drug. This is evident from the different dosages given to different groups of people. Though the dosage of drugs is generally demarcated as adult and pediatric age groups, yet the mainstay of differentiation is the body mass. (more…)

Drug Testing Method – Meant To Detect The Drugs

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The drugs that are ingested into our body has to go through a series of process starting from absorption, circulation, action on its major site and finally reaches the liver for getting metabolized. This metabolized substance then goes to the kidney via the renal vessels, gets filtered in the kidney and excreted in urine.

Every drug testing method is designed with the idea and view to detect the drugs before they get metabolized and get excreted. For this reason, you need to have a thorough knowledge about the different metabolic rates of different groups of drugs. Every drug has its own metabolic rate. Apart from this there are wide variations in the metabolic rates of different drugs among individual. This individual variation depends on the state of the liver and kidney in the body. People who have poor liver function take longer time to metabolize the same drug as compared to a person with normal liver function.

It is by this notion that whenever drug detection period is talked about, it is expressed in a range. And when you are planning to detect a group of drugs using the same drug test kit, then you must choose an optimum time that would be able to detect the desired drugs within that time interval. But one heartening fact is that most of the drugs of abuse have more or less the same metabolic rates because they are metabolized by the same type of enzymes in a similar fashion.

As opposed to extensive laboratory testing proceeds, there are an array of drug testing methods that are done in drug test strips making the test process less laborious and the interesting things is that the tests are pretty accurate in narrowing down on the probable number of drugs that one might have abused.

Getting Exposed By The Urine Drug Testing

Friday, December 18th, 2009

The most important way for drugs out of our body is through the renal excretory mechanism. The drugs that are taken orally for systemic absorption and action undergo metabolism in liver or kidney and excreted mainly via urine. This forms the basis of urine drug testing methods in most of the 10 drug test panel, nida 12 panel drug test, drug test 5 panel nondot and several other drug multi panel screen test that are available in online drug testing companies.

It is also called as dextropropoxyphene and often combined with acetaminophen. It is also used as an antitussive medication. As an analgesic, it alters the way the human brain responds to pain without any anesthetic effects.

Propoxyphene detection is mostly by propoxyphene screening urine with propoxyphene drug tester. Assay propoxyphene drug is also one of the methods; however, that is after the preliminary drugs test positive.

Abusive properties of propoxyphene:

The method of use of the drug is tablets taken orally, powdered and snorted, dissolved in water and injected. The drug is mainly abused because of its potential to give euphoric effects and pleasure. Propoxyphene is a weak opioid that binds to the receptors in the central nervous system binding the physiological opioids endorphins and enkephalins.

The major complications of propoxyphene use are respiratory arrest and psychotic conditions. Researches have showed that intravenous administration of propoxyphene has resulted in thrombophlebitis, abscesses, cellulitis, and vein sclerosis. Even, an instant of hemolytic anemia was experienced due to IV injection of propoxyphene.

Long term use of the drug increases the drug tolerance level and requires more dosage of the drug to get the same effect. Also, there is reduction or even cessation of production of endorphins by the brain which results in severe pain. This pain occurs with the non usage of propoxyphene. Long-term usage effects of the drug are liver problems, constipation resulting to colon rupture, stomach cramps, and nausea.

Withdrawal symptoms of propoxyphene are anxiety, depression, tiredness, sleeplessness, nausea, diarrhea, etc. A drug rehab program is essential to combat these withdrawal symptoms.

Medical properties of propoxyphene:
Propoxyphene is an opioid which is used to relieve mild to moderate pain.
