Methadone is a synthetic opiod that has action similar to opium but not derived from it. It is very effective in combating pain especially with a longer duration of action. It has good therapeutic indications including analgesic effect, anti tussives, and as anti addictive treatment for a number of people who are addicted to opioids. But it is also capable of producing addiction by a similar mechanism to opioids because it acts on the same receptor as morphine or codeine. (more…)
