Friday, December 18th, 2009

Saliva drug testing is one of the most effective screening methods for the detection of drugs of abuse. Drugs of abuse are therapeutic medications that have very narrow spectrum of action. It has to be administered in the right dosage for the desired therapeutic effect, doses lesser than the recommended levels would result in sub therapeutic responses, whereas higher doses than the recommended levels would lead to its abuse.

There are a number of ways to find out the drugs consumed by detecting qualitatively and quantitatively. It can be done using urine, blood, saliva, hair, etc. Of all these techniques, saliva drug testing is quite different because it can be done more conveniently than others. The street names of barbiturate are downers, blue heavens, goof balls, etc. Barbiturate testing is used to exclusively identify barbiturate abuse.

Abusive properties of barbiturate:

The barbiturate can be taken orally as a pill and also injected when it is dissolved in water. The effects of barbiturates are similar to that of alcohol. These are called as “brain relaxers” and create psychological dependence. The drug if used for more than a month has the potential to get one addicted to it. This drug is also used to counteract the effects of the stimulants like cocaine.

A little dose of barbiturate can cause drowsiness and intoxicated. A moderate amount of it causes slurred speed, staggered walking, confusion, thinking impairment, etc. A higher dose of barbiturate can lead to coma and respiratory distress, and even death. Barbiturates have been used many a time to make suicide attempts.

Barbiturate detection can be done as barbiturate urine screen or it can also be tested for from swab drug testing; however, a specimen validity test is important for all drugs.

Effects of barbiturates on pregnant women are more severe and it causes the new born to get addicted to it and is bound to have withdrawal symptoms. Some of the withdrawal symptoms of barbiturate are hallucinations, insomnia, vomiting, perspirations, tremors, fatigue, seizures, and light and noise sensitivity.

The use of barbiturates also results in certain diseases like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, nystagmus, acute confusional stage, rhabdomyolysis, etc.

Medical properties of barbiturate:

The main use of barbiturate is to treat seizure disorders like status epilepticus, tonic-clonic seizure, eclampsia, etc. It is also a very good anti-anxiety medication.
