Many people are against school drug testing, while others feel that it is necessary to provide regulation and to protect the welfare of the students.  At the heart of the debate for drug testing in schools is the right to privacy and the problems of drug abuse among students.

The US Supreme Court ruled in that schools could test student athletes for drug use.  In 1998, the US 7^th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that all students participating in extracurricular activities could be tested for drug use.  However, since then some courts have banned the testing of students.
