Drug Dependency And Withdrawal Produces A Spectrum Of Symptoms
Drug dependency can be of two types; either physical or psychological. Physical dependence is mainly seen when the drug is withdrawn. It produces a spectrum of symptoms opposite to the effects of the drug itself which are called as withdrawal symptoms. Psychological dependence is the compulsion to take the drug in order to maintain a state of well being. It can also occur in the absence of physical dependence. Cocaine, cannabis, LSD, amphetamines, anti depressants and anti psychotics does not produce any physical dependence. Alcohol, cocaine, morphine and LSD produce psychosis.
A varied range of drug testing methods are available to check drug dependency including multiple drug testing kits like 10 drug panel screen, 12 panel drug screen, 5 panel urine drug test, and even single panel drug testing kits.
Drug dependency is characterized by loss of appetite and weight, clumsy movements, unsteady gait, tremors, reddening and puffiness of the eyes, unclear vision, slurring of speech, loss of interest, sleeplessness, lethargy and passivity, acute anxiety, depression, profuse sweating, mood changes, temper tantrums, depersonalization, emotional detachment, impaired memory and concentration, preference for solitude, especially spending long hours in the toilet.
Withdrawal symptoms appear usually 6 to 8 hours after the stoppage of the drug or may be delayed to 24 to 48 hours which mainly depends on the type of drug abused and the duration of addiction. Other factors that determine addiction are dose of drug and the suddenness of the withdrawal of the drug.
Early symptoms are chillness, uneasiness, yawning, rhinorrhea and sensation of cold. This is followed by the difficulty in the respiration, goose skin, lacrimation, gross tremors and dilated pupil. Loss of appetite is invariably present in all the stages. In the third stage, the addict goes into sleep lasting from 8 to 16 hours. When they wake up, they will find increased intensity in the symptoms. There would also be cramps in the legs and abdomen, perspiration, fever, increased blood pressure, vomiting and diarrhea.
